Our lives can be enriched by deliberate, progressive training that allows us to cultivate both our physical and mental strengths. I use a combination of evidence based approaches to design safe, effective training programmes that cater to my clients’ unique goals.
Training should be kept simple, efficient and appropriately challenging. It should allow the trainee to feel and move better and show measurable progress over time. Above all, training should be fun!
My clients are invited to use a number of proven strategies for setting realistic goals, managing their mood and minimising day to day stress. I offer advice and support around nutrition and recovery and I specialise in advice for vegetarian and vegan athletes having been vegan myself for several years.
Strength training has been the most effective anti depressant I have managed to find. While I am certainly no therapist I do offer a range of home practices designed to work hand in hand with a suitable strength programme. Clients are encouraged to try a range of practices to manage low mood, identify habits and ways of thinking that aren’t useful and replace them with behaviours that better serve their goals. I support my clients to think about what makes them happy and to identify values and short, medium and long term goals. I am no expert but after many years of managing my own depression and anxiety (and mostly thriving in spite of them) I can definitely offer insights and methods that have proved to be game-changers in my own life. I draw on techniques used in mindfulness and CBT, among others. I create personalised plans using an array of different tools and collaborate with my clients to identify the useful ones and discard the less effective ideas to suit each person’s needs.
I believe there are many different forms of strength and that a well designed plan should cultivate all of them.
I think long term happiness necessarily includes exposure and adaptation to stress, cultivation of self knowledge and living consistently with your values.
